Kidnap and ransom insurance

How to Choose a Kidnap and Ransom Insurance Company

Kidnap and ransom cover is written by a small number of firms: a few large carriers that run it inside a specialty book, and a handful of specialists that write little else. Both place through brokers rather than selling direct, so what you can compare from outside is thin. Choosing between them comes down to what stands behind the policy when it is used.

We do not sell policies. We source and vet the security professionals who work the response side of these events.

What this page covers

Where we stand

Why go through us rather than direct

Two reasons: we already know who writes this line, and we look at it from the response end rather than the paperwork end. Price is not one of them. We do not quote and we do not mark anything up, so the premium is the underwriter’s number either way.

Knowing who writes it

Knowing who writes it matters more than it should. This is not a line you can shop by searching, and the firms that do it well are not the ones with the biggest marketing budget. We have vetted the specialized insurance firms that only handle K&R policies, and we send a requirement to the one that fits it.

Staffing the response end

Staffing the response end is what we do for a living. Silent Professionals sources and vets professionals across the private security industry, including the people who work the response side of these events: kidnap prevention, hostage rescue, and protective details in the places where these policies get bought. We do not run those operations. We staff them. So we come at this product from a different direction than a broker does, and we have no book of insurance business to protect.

Choosing a provider

What separates one K&R insurance company from another

What separates one K&R insurance company from another is the response network standing behind the policy, whether the cost of that response comes out of your ransom limit, and how tightly the territory and the dates are drawn. On a summary page the policies look alike. They are not, and the difference only becomes visible when one of them is actually used. These are the questions worth putting to any K&R insurance provider before you bind, in the order we would ask them.

Ask01

Who is the crisis response firm, and are they retained or introduced?

The money is not the main thing a K&R policy buys. A crisis response consultant is the specialist the insurer puts on the case when an incident opens, and that firm runs the negotiation, the family liaison, and the coordination with whoever is on the ground. Ask which firm it is by name. Ask whether they are retained under the policy or introduced after the fact. Ask how many people that firm keeps in the region you are actually going to. A firm that already has people in the region behaves very differently from one that has to go and find them after your call.

Ask02

Do the response costs come out of the ransom limit?

Ask whether consultants, negotiators, evacuation and the rest are paid inside your limit or on top of it. The answer differs between policies and it changes what the limit is worth. If weeks of professional fees come out of the same pot, the figure on the cover sheet is not the amount you would actually have available for a demand.

Ask03

Where does the coverage stop, and on what day?

These policies are written against declared territories and declared dates. Ask what happens if the trip extends, if the itinerary changes in country, if somebody drives across a border that was not on the schedule. Ask specifically about countries under US sanctions, and get that answer in writing rather than in conversation.

Ask04

What has to happen before a ransom can be paid?

Ask what the policy requires before a payment can be made, who has to consent, and how that consent is actually obtained at three in the morning in a different time zone. Most policies carry the condition. What differs is whether there is somebody on the other end who can act on it that night.

Ask05

What voids it?

Ask what disclosure does to the policy. Cover in this line generally depends on the insured not talking about it, and the practical consequence is that the people covered often do not know they are covered. Somebody in your organization still has to know. Ask the provider how they expect that to be handled, because the answer tells you how much real-world casework they have behind them.

Ask06

How fast can they bind, and what do they need in hand?

Some specialist firms can put a policy in place within days of travel. A generalist usually cannot, and you tend to find that out when you are already short of time. Ask what they need from you to bind, and ask it before you need the policy rather than after.

Ask07

Is this a standalone policy or a rider on something else?

Travel policies and some corporate programs carry a ransom element. Ask for the ransom sublimit in writing and hold it against what a demand in your destination actually looks like. A rider and a standalone policy are not the same product and they are not priced as though they were. The full comparison, with the sublimits travel cover actually carries, is on our explainer: travel insurance and K&R.

Rating

What sets the premium

Kidnap and ransom insurance is individually underwritten, so there is no rate card and no online quote.

If you want a general sense of what these policies cost, our explainer carries current figures: how much kidnap and ransom insurance costs. Read them as an order of magnitude rather than as a price, because in a line underwritten one case at a time that is as far as a published number can honestly go.

For a figure that reflects your own circumstances, we recommend answering the questionnaire on this page so that an underwriter can price your actual exposure. Eight things set that price, and you can work out roughly where you sit on each of them before you speak to anybody.

Underwriting

What a K&R underwriter is pricing

What is pricedWhat it depends on
Where your people are goingDestination does more to the premium than anything else on this list. Underwriters price against the abduction history of the specific country and region, not against the continent.
How long, and how oftenA single declared trip, a rolling annual program and permanent in-country presence are three different risks. So is a pattern that is easy to observe from outside.
Who is covered, and how manyNamed executives, a whole workforce, a family including household staff. The count matters and so does whether the schedule is named or blanket.
The profile of the people coveredPublic position, published wealth, the ease with which someone can be researched from open sources. Underwriters read what a kidnapper would read. Significant cryptocurrency holdings are underwritten differently, because holdings that can be traced from open sources can also be moved under duress, and that exposure is covered under its own kind of policy: cryptocurrency ransom insurance.
Whether there is an existing threatA live or recent threat against your people is a different underwriting conversation and it will be asked about early.
What the business doesOil and gas, minerals, maritime transport, armaments, media and finance each carry their own history in this line, and the sector sits in the rating.
How people move once they are thereChartered aircraft, a driver service, a personally operated rental car and public transport are not equivalent exposures, and ground movement is where most of these incidents begin.
The limit and the response structureThe ransom limit, whether response costs sit inside or outside it, and what security is already in place around the covered people.

Adjacent cover

What happens to the business while a key person is missing?

While a key person is missing, the business tends to stop with them. Contracts stall, sites close, people come out of the country, and the revenue that was supposed to come from that work stops as well. In a serious incident the ransom is often the smaller number, and it is the only one the K&R limit is sized for.

That is why interruption cover tied to security events (kidnapping, extortion, threat and political violence) is usually raised in the same conversation as the K&R policy, and why the specialist providers who write one commonly write the other. It is not the same product and it is not automatically part of what you are being quoted. Whether any of it sits inside your policy or beside it as a separate cover is one of the things to establish in writing before you bind.

Expect it to be the materially larger conversation of the two. Expect to be asked what a month of stopped operations is worth to you, because that is the figure this kind of cover is built around rather than the ransom limit.

We do not place either one. It is here because the question belongs in the same conversation, and it is an easy one to leave until an incident makes it obvious.

Policyholders

Who buys kidnap and ransom insurance

K&R is bought by companies that put people into places where abduction is a functioning business, and by individuals and families whose travel, wealth, or public position makes them worth taking. Each comes to it from a different direction, and each puts a different set of people on the policy.

Companies

Companies buy it when they keep an office somewhere abduction is a functioning business, when they send people into those places on a schedule, or when their people move high-value or sensitive property. In practice the cover sits over a named group: C-suite, board members, employees, contractors, or all of them. Oil and gas, minerals, maritime transport, armaments, technology, medical, finance and media are the sectors that come to us most often.

Individuals and families

Individuals and families buy it when their own travel, wealth, or public position makes them worth taking. That includes people traveling into a country with a kidnapping history, ultra-high-net-worth families and their households, political figures, and anyone moving a high-value commodity or a high-value person.

Common questions

Kidnap and ransom insurance, answered

The questions buyers put to us about kidnap and ransom insurance, answered in the order they tend to ask them.

Does Silent Professionals sell kidnap and ransom insurance?
No. Silent Professionals sources and vets professionals for the private security industry. We do not underwrite, sell, or administer insurance of any kind. We put a requirement in front of a specialist provider and the provider handles it from there.
Why does Silent Professionals write about kidnap and ransom insurance?
People contact Silent Professionals about a kidnapping when it has already happened, and what they are asking for is hostage rescue. Most of the people who come to us about a hostage rescue can’t afford one. A policy is what puts that response within reach. Sourcing and vetting is the work Silent Professionals is known for, and we brought it to this line. We researched the market and vetted the firms that write this cover, and what we found is on this page, so that it can be read before the trip rather than during an incident.
Does going through Silent Professionals cost more?
Not through us. We do not add anything to your premium. If a policy is placed, the provider pays us a referral fee out of its own side of the transaction.
How do I get a kidnap and ransom insurance quote?
Answer the questionnaire on this page. It asks where your people are going, who needs to be covered, how soon you need it in place, and how to reach you. It goes to the provider that fits the requirement, and the quote comes from them.
How fast can a K&R policy be put in place?
Some specialist firms can bind within days of travel when the information is in hand. The limiting factor is usually not the underwriter, it is how long it takes to describe the exposure properly.
Who are the kidnap and ransom insurance companies?
It is a short list. The firms that write this line well handle little else, and they place through brokers rather than selling direct, which is why they are hard to find by searching. Tell us the requirement and we will point it at the one that fits.
Which is the best kidnap and ransom insurance company?
There is no single best one, and anybody who names one without asking about your exposure is guessing. This line is underwritten case by case, so the firm that prices one risk well is not the firm that prices the next one well. The question worth asking is not who is best, it is which of them writes the kind of risk you are bringing, and what response sits behind the policy when it is used.
Do I need a kidnap and ransom insurance broker?
K&R insurance providers place through brokers rather than selling direct, so in practice a broker is involved either way. What is worth establishing is whether that broker places this line regularly or is placing it for the first time on your account. A submission put together by somebody who does not know what the underwriter is looking for costs you time, and usually costs you money as well.
